Scrubbing the walls and floors isn’t necessarily going to cut it, though. It’s not uncommon for the smell of mildew to emanate from fabrics, such as towels, and from other personal belongings (e.g., sneakers). After rinsing it off, run it through the washer as you would a normal load of laundry. Among household odors, mildew undoubtedly ranks among the worst.
Basements already have a bad rap for a place where yucky smells accumulate, so don’t let a dank-scented one stay that way for long. These places have an air ventilation system with air inlets that allow fresh air into the building. Then the air goes through air ducts into a supply fan, which then enhances the pressure of the air and supplies it to the rest of the building. When using bleach to clean mold, do not mix it (even when diluted) with any other cleaning solutions that contain ammonia because it will cause toxic fumes. And while you might be tempted to cover up bad odors with air fresheners or plug-in devices, Murphy warns against this.
There are several best practices for getting rid of musty smells in your home. A musty smell can also come from dirty curtains, carpets, and rugs, which is why it’s so important to wash them regularly. For a more moderate mold area, use bleach to clean up the mold. In a 1 gallon bucket of water, dilute 1 cup of chlorine bleach. This solution effectively kills mildew on surfaces like ceramic tile and grout, cement walls, and washable fabrics.
My House Smells Musty: 5 Things You Can Do to Make It Odor-Free
And unfortunately, it’s all too common, lurking in the dark, damp corners of your home. Rotting food has a distinctive sickly-sweet smell that tells our animal brains to stay far, far away. If you notice a rotten smell in your home, it could be that an old potato has fallen into the back of a cabinet. Otherwise, it could be that a mouse, rat, or other animal may have perished inside your home’s walls, ductwork, attic, crawl space, or chimney. Have a professional come and check your ductwork and plumbing as soon as possible to remove the deceased intruder. Nothing smells like a dirty, wet dog, but squirrels, raccoons, and rats do give off a similar odor.
For stains, we’ve also suggested a bleach and water mixture. Clean away any leftover food, remove perishables before they perish, and look for split cans or molding food items in the cupboards and remove them. Clean the area where they were to help eliminate the smell and prevent bacteria formation. The smell of rotting food is not usually described as musty, but it depends on the food, its age, and the bacteria that form. Perishable food left in cupboards, or even in the fridge, can go off and will become moldy.
Control the Humidity
"When their hair falls out, bacteria grow—and it could get nasty really quick," says Navas. Bathe your pet often and clean the spots where they sleep and eat once a week with soap and water (no harsh chemicals). Vacuum under beds and sofas to avoid hair (and odor) buildup. A great air freshener can also go a long way to help keep your spaces smelling less like your pets.
It's easy to clean up, but something I know I need to watch. Chiana has been at Homes & Gardens for two years, having started her journey in interior journalism as part of the graduate program. She also has a first-class degree in Literature from Lancaster University. ‘You should vacuum and use cleaning sprays once a week to keep them clean. Every three months, you should then think about hiring a carpet cleaning machine to avoid soaking and damaging the carpet,’ says Ivan Ivanov of End of Tenancy Cleaning. Luckily, there are plenty of cleaning tips that can help you stay on top of household cleaning without too much effort.
Small areas of mold and mildew can be cleaned with a mixture of bleach and water; more serious mold and mildew problems may require the services of a professional. An HVAC system can actually help reduce musty smells by circulating air and reducing moisture, but not if the pipes and vents are dirty or harbor bacteria. Just like the system itself needs regular maintenance, the pipes and ducts need regular cleaning.
However, know that it will return if you don't improve ventilation or work at getting rid of condensation. Investing in a dehumidifier is one option (as is opening windows). Get to the source of the stink and you'll be on your way to enjoying a home that smells as fresh as a summer breeze. The first step in getting rid of a mildew smell is to locate the source of the problem.
Make sure the filters you use fit your unit correctly and never cram in a filter that’s too large. It’s best practice to clean your AC coils at least once yearly, but some experts recommend twice yearly. An AC unit is a breeding ground for mold and mildew growth. Air conditioners and ductwork provide dark spaces where mold can grow, along with organic material such as dust and debris. This environment allows mold and mildew to thrive with the addition of condensation from cooling coils. Sometimes mould and damp refuse to go away even after you’ve followed all the advice in the book.
How Fast Do Dogwood Trees Grow? Growth Rate Explained
Dirty air filters, mold or mildew in the unit, or an underlying issue with one of the components could be the culprit. Call an HVAC technician to evaluate your unit or look into it yourself. Let the baking soda sit for at least an hour before vacuuming it up, and it’ll help neutralize odors. You can even combine baking soda and vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz the mixture to remove musty smells. The first step to getting rid of musty smells in your basement is identifying where they’re coming from.

“These can mask odors temporarily and contribute to indoor air pollution,” she says. The easiest way to remove moisture is to use a dehumidifier. These devices pull moisture out of the air and condense it into a removable tank that you can remove and empty. In some cases, you can route a drain hose to a floor or sink drain, removing the need to empty the tank. You can remove mold from damp drywall, concrete, and wood, but soaked drywall or insulation is easier to remove than repair. If the trash can itself picks up a musty odor, I treat with a surface odor remover.

So, if rooms that normally smell good suddenly have a musty odor you just can’t get rid of—you might need a professional to check behind the walls. In addition to creating an unpleasant odor, leaks can cause major problems with your home’s structure and negatively impact your health. Mold is the most common cause for musty odor, though it doesn’t necessarily mean the mold is out of control. Most homes have some degree of mold, but a strong smell of mold or mildew could indicate a problem and you should definitely find the source. Some situations warrant professional assistance from an HVAC technician.

If you’re going to go to the effort to replace old carpeting or paint the walls, protect your investment by following the proper steps. Before installing new carpeting, check the subfloor for stains that might be contributing to odor and replace or seal it with oil-based paint if necessary. For walls in high moisture areas like the bathroom, use a mold-resistant primer before you paint. If you’re successfully able to isolate the mildewed area, that means you can spot-treat it without going through the effort of cleaning the whole room. However, if you’ve searched high and low but cannot find any obvious mildew growth, cover all your bases by giving the entire space a once-over. Many manufactured homes use building products containing formaldehyde, including walls and flooring.
If you have carpets or upholstered furniture in your basement, consider renting a carpet and furniture steamer to give them a deep cleaning. Keep in mind that musty smells could also be due to pet odors on furniture or carpets. If everything is watertight and dry, and your traps are full of water, there’s a good chance that the issue is in the fabric of your carpets or upholstered furniture. Without a deep cleaning, it can be difficult to eliminate musty odors from the home. The first step is to identify the source of the odor, if you can. From there, you’ll have a better idea what steps you need to take to eliminate the odor and to prevent it from coming back.
If you keep breathing in air that smells musty and stale, it's time to work out exactly where it's coming from. Houses with high humidity levels tend to suffer with mold and mildew. Mold is a type of bacteria, and it requires water, oxygen, and food to thrive and grow. As such, it gets the oxygen and moisture it needs from your humid environment and can feed on the wallpaper and even the wood in your home. As well as regular hoovering, give your carpets a good, deep clean, at least twice a year, but every three months is better if you have pets or a humid house. It not only helps eliminate stains and dirt, but it deodorizes and kills bacteria.
A full drain pan can cause a musty smell.
Even if you don’t have mold, ventilation should help move the air and remove any musty smells. If you've ever smelled decaying wood or wet, musty towels left in a pile after a long weekend, you've smelled the stale, earthy odor of mold and mildew. A leaky pipe or roof can also cause the buildup of humidity and moisture that results in this offensive smell. Moisture and still air lingering in dark crevices around your home create a welcoming environment for the growth of mold and mildew. When the spores begin to multiply, they emit gasses that our noses can detect. Carpeting and upholstery can trap odors and continue to smell musty long after a basement is clean and dry.

The good news is that you don’t have to just accept the foul odors. A call to your local Aire Serv team will help you understand what’s causing the musty odor and how to eliminate it. There’s no one size fits all approach to addressing musty smells, which is why calling for help is so important. If your initial efforts to remove the odor haven't worked, schedule an appointment online with Aire Serv today. Such an odor can be a red flag that something is wrong and needs to be addressed. If you’re unsure if your home has mold, a musty odor is a good indicator that it may indeed be an issue.
Just make sure it's excellent, and there's adequate ventilation or airflow to make sure it dries properly. A musty smell can be really offensive and left to its own devices, the problem will likely only get worse, rather than go away on its own. After cleaning areas with mold or mildew, see what you can do to prevent future moisture problems.
Clean drip pans regularly – especially if you'd had any spills in the refrigerator. See Best Odor Eliminators for Refrigerators for more detailed fridge care. (See Preparedness Storage for more bulk storage information.) We tried keeping an area rug in the basement for a time, but found it was prone to cause mildew under the rug. Clean your air conditioner at least every year to prevent a musty smell. You can also clean it at the start of every season by cleaning the components and changing the air filters. If you feel uncomfortable cleaning your HVAC unit on your own, call a trained professional. Stachybotrys chartarum is a hazardous mold that produces poisonous mycotoxins that can cause respiratory problems and allergic reactions.
And because it is the job of your HVAC to push air around the house, it means that a musty smell in the pipes or dirty ducts will produce an obvious smell that gets pushed around the house. This is made worse because your solution to a musty smell might be to turn the AC up. To get musty smells under control, repair any leaks that you find. In areas with excessive moisture, install ventilation fans, place moisture barriers over damp soil, or redirect water flow on the home's exterior.
While a musty smell in a home is more often than not a symptom of mold and mildew, sometimes a musty smell is the result of a lack of ventilation and a build up of dust and grime. A common source of musty smells in homes are carpets and rugs that are either old, or have not been properly cleaned. It is easy to think that running the vacuum over them every few days is enough to keep them fresh, but it is no substitute for occasionally deep cleaning a carpet.
Carpeting is one of the worst offenders, but mold growth can hide in books, furniture, walls and more. Older houses develop leaks over time, letting moisture in where it shouldn't be. New houses are built so tight they trap too much moisture inside. Once you’ve done the work to eliminate the underlying cause of your home’s musty odor, the last thing you want is for it to come back. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to keep your home smelling fresh and clean. Many homes develop a musty odor, especially during seasonal changes and wet weather.
An HVAC system can smell musty when you turn it on due to mold or mildew, a dirty air filter, or some other issue with the internal components. If you notice a musty smell, address it immediately by inspecting the system or calling a licensed HVAC technician. If your air conditioner has a musty smell, you can perform a few troubleshooting steps. A dirty air filter can often cause an unpleasant odor to come from an HVAC unit. Mold or mildew, which is common in most air conditioning units, can also cause a foul smell to circulate.

Roderick foresees the family evils being propagated into future generations with a marriage to Madeline and vehemently discourages the union. Philip becomes increasingly desperate to take Madeline away; desperate to get away from her brother, she agrees to leave with him. Dreams, for instance, are the way our unconscious mind communicates with our conscious mind, but in such a way which shrouds or veils their message in ambiguous symbolism and messages. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ can also be analysed as a deeply telling autobiographical portrait, in which Roderick Usher represents, or reflects, Poe himself.
The Fall of the House of Usher (1950 film)
Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault.

La Chute de la maison Usher is a 1928 silent French horror film directed by Jean Epstein starring Marguerite Gance, Jean Debucourt, and Charles Lamy. A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state. Throwing the windows open to the storm, Roderick points out that the lake surrounding the house seems to glow in the dark, just as Roderick depicted in his paintings, but there is no lightning or other explainable source of the glow. It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances.

This is just one of the many exciting shows on the October 2023 TV schedule. In exchange for this protection, both Roderick and Madeline had to consent to the bargain that at the end of Roderick's life, just before he was fated to die anyway, his entire bloodline would die with him. Roderick and Madeline would also have to die at the same time, leaving this world the same way they came into it. The siblings agreed to the deal, left the bar, and soon after became convinced that the whole thing had been a shared delusion.
Roderick Usher
As Philip is preparing to leave following the entombment, the butler, Bristol (Harry Ellerbe), lets slip that Madeline suffered from catalepsy. Roderick Usher is a gifted poet and artist, whose talents the narrator praises before sharing a poem Usher wrote, titled ‘The Haunted Palace’. The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was. Contemporary readers and critics interpreted the story as a somewhat sensationalized account of Poe’s supposed madness. (As a recluse, Poe often invited such accusations.) Later scholarship pursued alternative interpretations.

The worldly reason, however, assigned for this singular proceeding, was one which I did not feel at liberty to dispute. The brother had been led to his resolution, so he told me, by consideration of the unusual character of the malady of the deceased, of certain obtrusive and eager inquiries on the part of her medical men, and of the remote and exposed situation of the burial ground of the family. I will not deny that when I called to mind the sinister countenance of the person whom I met upon the staircase, on the day of my arrival at the house, I had no desire to oppose what I regarded as at best but a harmless, and by no means an unnatural precaution.
Who’s in the cast of The Fall of the House of Usher?
As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. The Fall of the House of Usher is a 1950 British horror film directed by Ivan Barnett and starring Gwen Watford in her film debut, with Kaye Tendeter and Irving Steen. It is an adaptation of the 1839 short story of the same title by Edgar Allan Poe. At the request of Usher, I personally aided him in the arrangements for the temporary entombment.
Certain accessory points of the design served well to convey the idea that this excavation lay at an exceeding depth below the surface of the earth. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendor. In December 2021, Mike Flanagan announced on Twitter that principal photography began on The Fall of the House of Usher in January 2022. What’s On Netflix reported that, according to Production Weekly, this Netflix limited series was scheduled to begin filming on January 24th, 2022 and end on May 25th, 2022. However, Flanagan confirmed (via Twitter) that filming wrapped on July 9, 2022.
Tales (Poe)/The Fall of the House of Usher
After all, Roderick Usher is a poet and artist, well-read (witness the assortment of books which he and the narrator read together), sensitive and indeed overly sensitive (to every sound, taste, sight, touch, and so on). Many critics have interpreted the story as, in part, an autobiographical portrait of Poe himself, although we should be wary, perhaps, of speculating too much about any parallels. Roderick grows more erratic in his behaviour, and the narrator reads to his friend to try to soothe him. The plot of the romance (a fictional title invented by Poe himself, called ‘Mad Trist’) concerns a hero named Ethelred who enters the house of a hermit and slays a dragon. The film uses a framing device set in a gentlemen's club where one of the members reads to his friends from a copy of Poe's book. And Ethelred uplifted his mace, and struck upon the head of the dragon, which fell before him, and gave up his pesty breath, with a shriek so horrid and harsh, and withal so piercing, that Ethelred had fain to close his ears with his hands against the dreadful noise of it, the like whereof was never before heard."
“The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories. The narrator and Roderick place her in a tomb despite her flushed, lively appearance. In the tale's conclusion, Madeline escapes from the tomb and returns to Roderick, scaring him to death. No sooner had these syllables passed my lips, than—as if a shield of brass had indeed, at the moment, fallen heavily upon a floor of silver—I became aware of a distinct, hollow, metallic and clangorous, yet apparently muffled reverberation. Completely unnerved, I leaped to my feet; but the measured rocking movement of Usher was undisturbed. His eyes were bent fixedly before him, and throughout his whole countenance there reigned a stony rigidity.
Roderick then invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where he poisoned her drink and set to work mummifying her. It was shortly after this that Auggie arrived at the house to hear Roderick's confession. Only, as evidenced by the noises coming from the basement, Madeline wasn't quite dead. Decades later, once it became clear that Verna was the one killing off the Usher children, Madeline tried to sidestep the deal by convincing Roderick to kill himself. But Verna wasn't willing to let him get off that easy and brought him back to face the full extent of his reckoning, the death of his granddaughter Lenore (Kyliegh Curran), the only morally good Usher.
Frederick "Freddie" Usher is Roderick's eldest child and the natural heir to Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, but he's also the least equipped to run the family business out of all his siblings. Often picked on by his brothers and sisters, Freddie bears a fiery jealousy and compounding insecurity, which forces him down a path that even those closest to him are shocked to see. Meanwhile, Jill becomes intimate with Rick and tells him she has missed her period. In the meantime, Jill has discovered that the Usher family has practiced twincest for the past five or six generations, right down to Maddy and Rick. All the prior generations had twins, who later became a couple and birthed twins of their own and so on down the line to Maddy and Rick, who were to continue the Usher curse. The storm was still abroad in all its wrath as I found myself crossing the old causeway.

Roderick and Madeline are the only remaining members of the Usher family. "You must not—you shall not behold this!" said I, shudderingly, to Usher, as I led him, with a gentle violence, from the window to a seat. "These appearances, which bewilder you, are merely electrical phenomena not uncommon—or it may be that they have their ghastly origin in the rank miasma of the tarn. Let us close this casement—the air is chilling and dangerous to your frame. Here is one of your favorite romances. I will read and you shall listen;—and so we will pass away this terrible night together." Our books—the books which, for years, had formed no small portion of the mental existence of the invalid—were, as might be supposed, in strict keeping with this character of phantasm. We pored together over such works as the Ververt et Chartreuse of Gresset; the Belphegor of Machiavelli; the Heaven and Hell of Swedenborg; the Subterranean Voyage of Nicholas Klimm by Holberg; the Chiromancy of Robert Flud, of Jean D’Indaginé, and of De la Chambre; the Journey into the Blue Distance of Tieck; and the City of the Sun of Campanella. One favorite volume was a small octavo edition of the Directorium Inquisitorium, by the Dominican Eymeric de Cironne; and there were passages in Pomponius Mela, about the old African Satyrs and Œgipans, over which Usher would sit dreaming for hours.

But, in his disordered fancy, the idea had assumed a more daring character, and trespassed, under certain conditions, upon the kingdom of inorganization. I lack words to express the full extent or the earnest abandon of his persuasion. The belief, however, was connected (as I have previously hinted) with the gray stones of the home of his forefathers. Its evidence—the evidence of the sentience—was to be seen, he said (and I here started as he spoke), in the gradual yet certain condensation of an atmosphere of their own about the waters and the walls. The result was discoverable, he added, in that silent, yet importunate and terrible influence which for centuries had molded the destinies of his family, and which made him what I now saw him—what he was. For several days ensuing her name was unmentioned by either Usher or myself; and during this period I was busied in earnest endeavors to alleviate the melancholy of my friend.

When a door, at length, closed upon her, my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the countenance of the brother; but he had buried his face in his hands, and I could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears. Upon my entrance, Usher arose from a sofa on which he had been lying at full length, and greeted me with a vivacious warmth which had much in it, I at first thought, of an overdone cordiality—of the constrained effort of the ennuyé man of the world. A glance, however, at his countenance convinced me of his perfect sincerity. We sat down; and for some moments, while he spoke not, I gazed upon him with a feeling half of pity, half of awe.
We painted and read together; or I listened, as if in a dream, to the wild improvisations of his speaking guitar. And thus, as a closer and still closer intimacy admitted me more unreservedly into the recesses of his spirit, the more bitterly did I perceive the futility of all attempt at cheering a mind from which darkness, as if an inherent positive quality, poured forth upon all objects of the moral and physical universe, in one unceasing radiation of gloom. The windows were long, narrow, and pointed, and at so vast a distance from the black oaken floor as to be altogether inaccessible from within. Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects around; the eye, however, struggled in vain to reach the remoter angles of the chamber, or the recesses of the vaulted and fretted ceiling.
But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth. He admitted, however, although with hesitation, that much of the peculiar gloom which thus afflicted him could be traced to a more natural and far more palpable origin—to the severe and long-continued illness—indeed to the evidently approaching dissolution—of a tenderly beloved sister, his sole companion for long years, his last and only relative on earth. "Her decease," he said, with a bitterness which I can never forget, "would leave him (him the hopeless and the frail) the last of the ancient race of the Ushers." While he spoke, the lady Madeline (for so was she called) passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment, and, without having noticed my presence, disappeared. I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread; and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings. A sensation of stupor oppressed me, as my eyes followed her retreating steps.
Much that I encountered on the way contributed, I know not how, to heighten the vague sentiments of which I have already spoken. His countenance, I thought, wore a mingled expression of low cunning and perplexity. The valet now threw open a door and ushered me into the presence of his master. Nevertheless, in this mansion of gloom I now proposed to myself a sojourn of some weeks. Its proprietor, Roderick Usher, had been one of my boon companions in boyhood; but many years had elapsed since our last meeting. A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country—a letter from him—which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply.
His countenance was, as usual, cadaverously wan—but, moreover, there was a species of mad hilarity in his eyes—and evidently restrained hysteria in his whole demeanor. His air appalled me—but anything was preferable to the solitude which I had so long endured, and I even welcomed his presence as a relief. The disease of the lady Madeline had long baffled the skill of her physicians. A settled apathy, a gradual wasting away of the person, and frequent although transient affections of a partially cataleptical character, were the unusual diagnosis.
Fans of Mike Flanagan may recognize many of the names from previous projects, including The Midnight Club and the well-reviewed film adaptation of Doctor Sleep. Flanagan also disclosed, during the initial cast announcement, that McDonnell plays Rodrick’s sister, Madeline Usher. The second wave of cast announcements included Henry Thomas, Samantha Sloyan, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Zach Gilford, Katie Parker, and Michael Trucco. As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution.
